چکیده

Regular operation of weather radar mandates frequent calibration to ensure accurate measurements. Even modest calibration errors in reflectivity factor Z and differential reflectivity ZDR may produce severe deficiencies in the quality of radar products such as rainfall estimates and hydrometeor classes. Radar users, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), rely on high quality weather radar data to ensure efficient operations. Techniques for absolute calibration of Z and ZDR measured with dual-polarization weather radars are examined in this paper. The idea of polarimetric selfconsistency in the rain medium is tested for Z calibration (e.g., Goddard et. al 1994, Scarchilli et al. 1996, Vivekanandan et al. 2003) and the polarimetric properties of natural weather scatterers are used for ZDR calibration (e.g., Gorgucci et al. 1999, Bringi and Chandrasekar 2001). The Z calibration procedure is implemented in real-time and tested using a large dataset collected during the Joint Polarization Experiment (JPOLE). This calibration routine operates continuously for the standard VCP during data acquisition and processing.

Improved Polarimetric Calibration for Atmospheric Radars

Polarization properties of radar waves that are scattered from atmospheric objects are of great interest in meteorological studies. However, polarimetric radar measurements are often not sufficiently accurate for retrieving physical properties of targets. To compensate for errors, radar polarimetric calibration is applied. Typical calibrations are performed based on measurements of point target...

4r.5 Demonstration of Range Oversampling Techniques on the Wsr-88d

Among the planned upgrades for the NEXRAD network of weather surveillance radars are superresolution (1/4 km reflectivity and 0.5 deg radials) and polarimetric capabilities. In either case, keeping current update times (i.e., same antenna rotation rates) results in meteorological variable estimators with unacceptable large errors. A family of methods to reduce errors in estimates of spectral mo...

Differential power calibration for weather radar

Dual polarized weather radars, radars that can transmit both horizontal (H) and vertical (V) polarized waves, are becoming more common in the world. Dual polarization is accomplished via fast alternate transmission of H and V polarization or simultaneous H and V polarization transmission. The simultaneous H and V transmit mode is becoming quite popular since a high power, costly, polarization s...

Processing of Oversampled Signals in Range on Polarimetric Weather Radars with Mismatched Channels

Processing oversampled signals in range with a whitening transformation has been proposed as a means to reduce the variance of meteorological variable estimates on polarimetric Doppler weather radars. However, the original formulation to construct decorrelation transformations does not account for mismatches in the polarimetric channels, which results in abnormally biased polarimetric variable ...
